Weekly Sports Recap 2/26/23 – 3/4/23

Boys Basketball: Peru started off Sectionals week with a battle with the Mississinewa Indians. Peru couldn’t get much offense going during the first half, heading into halftime down 29-30. The Tigers struggled to fight during the 3rd quarter, and went into the 4th down 46-52. Peru’s offense exploded during the 4th quarter to make a comeback win 71-63 over the Indians. Leading the Tigers was #11 Matthew Roettger with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal and block. #3 Braxten Robbins had 18 points, and a rebound. #5 Alex Ross had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. #2 Gavin Eldridge had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. #0 Ian Potts had 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. #12 Bryce Hill had 3 points, and a rebound. #14 Xavier Turner had a steal.

Peru took on a lofty #5 ranked Oak Hill team for the second round of the sectionals. Peru was down 16-2 with not alot of time left in the first quarter, but marched to a 27-2 run during the end of the 1st quarter and into halftime to take a 29-18 lead. Oak Hill battled but the Tigers kept ahead during the 3rd quarter 35-29 headed into the final stretch. Peru held on for a huge upset and avenged a regular season loss and beat the Oak Hill Eagles 55-47. Leading the Tigers was #11 Matthew Roettger with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 steals. #2 Gavin Eldridge had 16 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. #5 Alex Ross had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steals. #3 Braxten Robbins had 8 points, and a rebound and assist. #0 Ian Potts had 3 points, a rebound, 4 assists, and a steal. #14 Xavier Turner had 2 points, and a rebound.

Peru took on another top 5 ranked team for the sectional championship, this time against #3 Norwell. Peru got ahead quickly and never looked back, leading 44-33 headed into halftime. The Tigers kept ahead during the 3rd quarter leading 54-45 going into the 4th quarter. Peru didn’t give in during the 4th quarter, and the Tigers clinched their 2nd straight sectional championship, and grabbed their 2nd upset win over top 5 teams in 3A in 2 days, beating the Norwell Knights 78-68. Leading the Tigers was #2 Gavin Eldridge had 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. #11 Matthew Roettger had 21 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. #5 Alex Ross had 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal and block. #0 Ian Potts had 8 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist. #3 Braxten Robbins had 6 points, and a rebound and steal. #14 Xavier Turner had an assist.
