Weekly Sports Roundup 2/12/23 – 2/18/23

Boys Basketball: Peru traveled to Rochester on Friday, looking to stay in contention for the conference championship. Peru held the lead after the first quarter 13-7, but Rochester exploded for a 27-28 lead at halftime. Rochester kept ahead after the 3rd quarter 38-44, and Peru’s comeback wasn’t enough and Rochester knocked off the Tigers, and Peru was eliminated from the conference championship. Maconaquah beat Manchester and a three-way tie for 1st was no more, and Tippecanoe Valley was outright TRC Champions. Leading the Tigers was #5 Alex Ross with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal and block. #11 Matthew Roettger had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. #2 Gavin Eldridge had 14 points, 7 rebounds, and an assist, and a steal. #3 Braxten Robbins had 3 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. #0 Ian Potts had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. #14 Xavier Turner had 2 rebounds. / Peru hosted their last home game this year against the Argos Dragons. Peru slammed down on the gas and never slowed down. Peru led 44-27 at halftime, 68-46 after the third quarter, and beat Argos in a blowout 80-63. Leading the Tigers was #11 Matthew Roettger with 30 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal and block. #2 Gavin Eldridge had 19 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. #3 Braxten Robbins had 11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. #5 Alex Ross had 8 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. #14 Xavier Turner had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and an assist. #0 Ian Potts had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and a steal. #10 Reis Bellar had a block. #12 Bryce Hill had a rebound. #15 Jaxson Manriquez did not pick up any stats. #20 Oliver Rabe had a rebound. #23 Isaac Braley had a rebound.

Wrestling: Cooper Baldwin represented Peru High School at the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals on Friday. He battled with Gavyn Whitehead of New Castle. Cooper may have lost the match, but Peru won’t forget this amazing run for Peru. Cooper ended his season at 36-5, TRC, Sectional, and Regional champion, and 3rd place at Semi-State, all at 138 lbs.
